THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF LESOTHO DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY Introduction to plant taxonomy Taxonomy  Taxonomy is the science of classification of organisms.  Taxonomy is concerned with naming and classifying the diverse forms of life.  Classification in biology is arrangement of organisms into groups with common characteristics.  Taxonomy has two branches – nomenclature (naming of organisms) and systematics (placing of organisms into groups).  Systematics is done on the basis of similarities and differences.
